Compression Bandages Vs Ace Wraps

Compression bandages are made with a stretchy elastic fabric and actively apply pressure to healing areas and can be a large part of care routines depending on patient needs. The general purpose of any bandage is to support and protect a body area, allowing it to heal more efficiently.

Compression bandages are generally prescribed in long-term treatments because of their ability to assist in maintaining the skin’s integrity and elasticity. They also help to maintain physical improvements from body therapies including massage and help maintain a proper limb structure. Compression bandages are also effective for increasing blood flow and energizing fibrinolytic activity. Additionally, compression bandages aid in the reduction of fluid build-up in the limbs. Counteractively though, when long stretch compression bandages are left on overnight they can actually assist in the accumulation of fluids.

Compression bandages are available in 3 kinds that serve different purposes

Short stretch compression bandages are worn on limbs and provide effective treatment for conditions including venous ulcers, lymphedema, leg ulcers, and small wounds. Short stretch compression bandages feature the ability to shorten around the affected area, applying proper consistent pressure. At the same time, these bandages do not increase pressure during times of rest, making them ideal for long-term treatments. Short stretch compression bandages are capable of resisting pressure from contracting internal muscle pressure.

Note – While short stretch compression bandages can be worn while patients are sleeping, it is not always recommended. Make sure to review this course of treatment with a medical professional.

Long stretch compression bandages are elastic bandages that can be applied to large body areas, including large portions of a limb. These compression bandages apply pressure to areas of high-resting pressure, making it essential for patients to remove the bandage during times of rest, including sleeping. Long stretch compression bandages are capable of being stretched up to 3 times their original size. These compression bandages are effective for physical therapy treatments, venous leg ulcers, and lymphedema. But again, it is stressed that long stretch compression bandages are not ideal for overnight use.

The ACE Bandage is yet another type of compression bandage but has a specific use, different from its short stretch and long stretch counterparts. ACE bandages are specifically designed to help heal acute sports injuries. ACE bandages are simply trademarked elastic compression bandages, but do not offer the same treatment options as other compression bandage types. However, ACE bandages do provide quick relief to painful sports injuries including bruises, sprains, twisted joints, pulls, or other acute conditions that cause swelling. In addition, they also provide support to injured joints including the knees and elbows.
