What is Hypertension?
Our blood pressure goes up and down throughout the day, but continually high blood pressure can be very dangerous. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can cause damage to the arteries which in turn can cause a heart attack, stroke or even kidney disease, among other complications. Because it does not yield any symptoms, you might not be aware of the danger. It is important to keep track of your blood pressure measurements so that you and your doctor can work together to keep you healthy.

What does my blood pressure reading mean?
A blood pressure monitor measures how hard the blood pushes against your arteries as it is pumped through your body. It is measured by temporarily stopping blood flow (tightening the cuff) through an artery and then listening for it to begin again as the air is released from the cuff. It is usually taken around the upper arm. Digital blood pressure monitors first measure the systolic pressure as the cuff is slowly released allowing the blood to flow through the artery again (marked by the sound it initially makes), and then the diastolic pressure as the sound of the blood flowing stops. It is read “systolic over diastolic” (ex.120/80).
