What does it mean if I am leaking amniotic fluid?

Amniotic fluid is the fluid that surrounds the fetus inside the amniotic sac. It not only protects the baby as it grows, but also carrys vital nutrients to the fetus that it needs to develop. Amniotic fluid leakage can be a result of a rupture or tear in the amniotic sac, or even a defect in the sac, uterus or cervix.

If a pregnant woman suspects that she is leaking amniotic fluid, even a miniscule amount, she should see her doctor immediately. It may stop itself over time, but there is a risk of obtaining a bacterial infection that could pass into the uterus and fetus. She can also go into labor soon after it starts leaking.
