Blood pressure is the measurement of the amount of force that blood exerts against your arteries as it is pumped through your body by the heart. It is measured by temporarily stopping blood flow (tightening the cuff) through an artery and then listening for it to begin again as the air is released from the cuff. It is usually taken around the upper arm.

 Digital blood pressure monitors are great for simple, automatic results. This particular one also measures your puls rate and detects irregular heart beats (arrhythmia) for more detailed information about your heart and how it's working. First, the systolic pressure is measured the as the cuff is slowly released allowing the blood to flow through the artery again (marked by the sound it initially makes), and then the diastolic pressure is measured as the sound of the blood flowing stops. It is read “systolic over diastolic” (ex.120/80).
