What does a stress test involve?

Come to your stress test appointment prepared. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are suitable for walking, follow your doctor’s instructions for food, drink and medicatios to take prior to the test and if you regularly use an inhaler you should bring it with you. It is usually advised to stay away from caffeine at least 12 hours prior to the appointment because this stimulant can skew your results.

There are a few kinds of stress tests. The one chosen depends on your mobility, as well as certain characteristics the doctor is looking for. During a treadmill stress test, you will be attached at the chest to an ECG machine by small electrodes (soft patches) as you walk on a treadmill. The doctor will adjust the speed and inclination of the treadmill as he/she monitors your heart’s activity during levels of rest and exercise.
