How do I prepare for a stress test?
During a treadmill stress test, you will be attached at the chest to an ECG machine by small electrodes (soft patches) as you walk on a treadmill. The doctor will adjust the speed and inclination of the treadmill as he/she monitors your heart’s activity. This cardiovascular test is usually used to determine early signs and risks of heart disease, monitor heart treatments to see how they are working, and determine safe exercise levels for you. Afterwards, your doctor will usually measure your blood pressure as you rest.
You should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are suitable for walking, follow your doctor’s instructions for food, drink and medication intake prior to the test, and if you regularly use an inhaler you should bring it with you.
