What is a stress test?
A stress test is used to identify possible signs and symptoms of heart disease by showing what areas of the heart aren’t getting enough blood or are damaged. The most common test is the treadmill stress test. As you walk on the treadmill, your doctor will monitor you for chest pain, ECG (electrocardiogram) changes and other abnormal heart activity during both exercise and rest.
An echocardiogram clearly graphs and measures heart movement onto a monitor which illustrates any abnormal resting and non-resting movement for your doctor. If you are unable to exercise, your doctor may perform other types of tests including a dobutamine stress test, which utilizes a drug that will make the heart act as though you were exercising; or a nuclear stress test in which the patient is injected with a radioactive substance that shows clear pictures of the heart on a monitor during both rest and exercise.
