What is a TENS Unit?
The acronym TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator. The device is attached to the affected part of the body by electrodes and sends small electrical pulses through the electrodes to your body. The intensity of the pulses can be adjusted using the dials on the unit, and can actually be seen in the person. The muscles receiving the treatment twitch slightly with each pulse.
Even though it sounds like you’re going to be electrocuted for an hour or so, it is actually quite relaxing. The TENS unit relaxes the muscles, promoting correct positioning and tension. Chiropractors often use this device to treat back pain and many dentists use different types of TENS units to treat TMJ/TMD patients.
