Long-term catheters vs. Intermittent catheters
There are many different types of catheters and each is made with a specific purpose in mind and with different tips and anti-infection properties for easy of use and patient safety. There are two types of urinary catheterization – long-term and intermittent. Long-term catheterization requires a catheter that has the ability to stay in the bladder, like the Foley catheter. This type of unit features a balloon on one end that is inflated with fluid with a syringe.
Intermittent catheterization is commonly used in patients who experience urine retention and cannot release it on their own. These types of catheters are sometimes known as Robinson catheters and work much the same way as the Foley, except without the balloon and it is removed after each scheduled use. Red rubber catheters, such as this one by ReliaMed, are made to be patient-friendly, are often for one time use only and feature small openings ("eyes") that are designed for optimal drainage and clog-resistance.
