Originally called gamekeeper’s thumb, skier’s thumb is characterized by an injury to the ligaments around the thumb area. This type of injury is usually caused by a fall – such as on skis with a ski pole in hand – with something in the hand for the thumb to land on causing pain between the thumb and index finger, swelling, weakness, limited mobility and bruising.
