What is a Foley Catheter?

A Foley catheter is a sterile, hollow device inserted into the bladder to drain urine. The Foley catheter (indwelling catheter) is held in place with a balloon at the end, which is filled with sterile water to prevent movement. It also prevents the catheter from being removed or pulled from the patient. Large eye holes and drainage lumen facilitate urine flow, and the thick funnel helps prevent collapse when irrigating. The contoured, reinforced tip protects the catheter from puncturing the urethra, and strong symmetric balloons enhance catheter reliability.

The Foley catheter is usually connected to a drainage bag (collection bag) for urine disposal. These collection bags are generally checked and emptied every 1 to 2 hours. A Foley catheter holder is sometimes attached to the leg to help keep the catheter from pulling away from the bladder causing irritation and discomfort.

When changing a Foley catheter, sterile products are generally used to prevent infection and cross contamination including sterile gloves, sterile towel drapes, and sterile water to flush the catheter of any debris to prevent urinary tract infections. The best way to ensure sterilization is to utilize a Foley insertion tray. This tray has all the sterile components needed to change a Foley catheter in one convenient package, and it saves on time, storage space and facility money.
