Contaminated Ultrasound Gel

An alert issued by the FDA has resulted in the seizing of contaminated ultrasound gel manufactured by Pharmaceutical Innovations Inc out of Newark, NJ. Due to an alert issued regarding the use of this particular brand, patients had reported illnesses that were acquired during examination.

What contaminated the ultrasound gel?

When tested, FDA sources found traces of two bacteria strains that can result in conditions such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and bacteremia. No comment has yet been issued by the manufacturer as to how or why the product became contaminated.

How was it found?

According to reports, 16 patients who had been exposed to this brand of ultrasound gel during examinations had become infected with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. The effect of this bacteria can lead to inflammation and infection resulting in serious illness or even death.

How do I know if I have been exposed?

If you have had any recent tests utilizing ultrasound gel such as a sonogram or echocardiogram, it would be worth contacting the medical care provider to determine which brand of ultrasound gel was used.
