We've all heard a lot about masks in the past couple of years, and many businesses and government services have resumed mandatory masking with the advent of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. And during this time, one type of mask has been touted as the standard for virus prevention: the N95 mask. But what makes it different from other masks? Read on to understand why N95 masks are in such high demand!
The N95 standard for filtering facepiece respirators is regulated by NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The N95 standard indicates that you can use the mask in a Non-Oil environment (where no oil-based particulates are present; this is only relevant for workplaces), and that the mask has a 95 percent efficiency rating in filtering out contaminants. These contaminants can be dust, mists, or fumes in a workplace environment, or in a health care environment can be the kind of airborne particulates and droplets exhaled when we breathe.
N95 masks are made of an electrostatic, non-woven polypropylene fiber and filter out particles at a minimum size of .3 microns. The vast majority of droplets in your breath are larger than this, and the elecrostatic surface of an N95 mask entraps particles.
Masks aren't just for pandemic situations either! They're widely used by citizens throughout the world during normal cold & flu seasons. In fact, rates of influenza have dropped sharply in the flu seasons since mask wearing became a feature of daily life.
