Imagine major surgery that can be performed through even the smallest of incisions. Imagine having the benefits of a definitive treatment but with the potential for significantly less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. All of this can be possible with the da Vinci surgical system by Intuitive Surgical.
Last week, a representative from Intuitive Surgical, Kris Benson, presented the device at the Holiday Inn in Utica, NY. Mountainside Medical’s own Brian Cooley got to sit in the driver’s seat of this new surgical robot and experience first hand what it would be like to operate this innovative machine.
With this new state-of the-art surgical system, the company is improving the current standards for surgical care by changing the way patients experience surgery. The minimally invasive da Vinci uses the latest in surgical and robotics technologies for easier, more beneficial routine and complex surgeries.
“Taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand” according to their website.
The da Vinci does not replace the surgeon with a completely autonomous robot at the controls. On the contrary, your surgeon is controlling every aspect of the surgery with the assistance of the da Vinci robotic platform and it’s four robotic arms. It is designed to make the process less invasive and your surgeon more precise.
The da Vinci system features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate to a degree that is far greater than a human wrist ever could on its own. As a result, the da Vinci enables the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.
Hopefully, within the near future, the brilliant doctors of this area will be able to perform less invasive surgery in a variety of fields including urologic, gynecologic, colorectal and even general surgeries with the help of the da Vinci surgical robotics system.
