What is Twill Tape?

Twill tape is a type of fabric medical tape that is woven into a twill pattern - parallel and diagonal ribs.  The signature herringbone pattern makes this tape extremely strong, making this kind of tape very popular when sewing. In the medical field, it is popularly used to reinforce seams, secure tracheostomy tubing, and provides sturdy ties for closing garments, like hospital gowns.

Different materials can be used to make twill tape. Cotton and polyester are very common materials used, but wool, linen, and even silk are used in some regions. Many companies also make “naked” tape, a kind of tape that is undyed, others produce twill tape in a wide range of colors and patterns. The width of twill tape can vary, with thinner versions being used for things like ties, while and wider ones to reinforce heavy seams and the like.

The quality of this tape can vary, with cheaper variations being more prone to raveling and running dyes.  If you are unsure about the quality of the twill tape you are using test a sample for color fastness before throwing it all into the wash, because running colors can permanently stain garments.  It would also be a good idea to sew down the ends of a strip tightly and securely to reduce raveling.
