Regular exercise, even at low intensity, can help to increase overall wellness, improve chronic ailments, and even enhance mental state. A study recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that walking regularly can help improve a variety of physical and mental health conditions.
The study, focusing on 2,000 adults in 14 countries, examined the effects of joining an outdoor walking group. Participants varied in background, state physical and mental health. It was found that of these participants, improvements were found in blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat, weight, cholesterol, lung power, and mental health.
Three-quarters of study participants stuck with the program and developed positive attitudes about physical activity, as well as the benefits from walking regularly. There were a couple minor injuries due to slips and trips, though overall, participants experienced significant improvement to both physical and mental health.
