What Are Symptoms of Alzheimer's?

More than 5 millions people in the United States have some stage of Alzheimer's disease. This progressive disease destroys the memory and other important mental functions that occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. This disorder attacks the brain's nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes. Dementia is a loss of thinking, remembering, and reasoning skills that interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Dementia ranges in severity from the mild stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning, to the severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic care.
