A simple, fast prevention method to avoid infection and cross contamination is to cleanse the skin prior to creating a break or puncture to the skin - like an IV or drawing blood. Prep pads and swabsticks are pre-saturated with a concentration of antibacterial solution (alcohol, Povidone-iodine, etc.) that is both safe for use the skin and effective in cleansing the area of bacteria.
