Troubleshooting Incontinence Products

Incorrect selection, sizing, and placement of incontinence products can lead to a number of challenges that will increase costs and the care required for the individual. To ensure the best chance of success for your home or facility we have compiled a checklist of signs and solutions to enable enhanced patient care.

Incontinence and Leakage

Leakage may be caused by any of the following:

1. Improper product for the individual's needs
2. Incorrectly sized products
3. Improperly placed leg cuffs between the thighs and perineal area
4. Placement of product is off-center
5. Lower level of absorbency than necessary
6. Improper positioning of external genitalia (males)

Skin Irritations from Incontinence

Skin degradation can result from incontinence if:

1. Leg cuffs are not adequately placed between the thighs and perineal area
2. Perineal area is not cleaned and cared for with each occurrence
3. Brief sizing and selection is not appropriate for the person's needs
4. Fastening tapes are in direct contact with the skin

Incontinence and Blisters

Blisters may occur as a result of:

1. Outside parts of the product touching the skin
2. Incorrect placement and smoothing of the product
3. Side flaps not being unfolded before product application

Poorly Fitting Incontinence Products

Improper fit and performance can result from:

1. Lack of correct measurement of hip and waist area (use the larger number)
2. Off-center placement of tape tabs

Correct care can make the individual more comfortable, reduce the need for changing, and lower costs for products. These elements should help when troubleshooting incontinence products and related issues.
