What is Anaphylaxis?

Learn the signs of a severe allergic reaction

Anaphylaxis is a severe life-threatening allergic reaction that hits fast and hard. People who suffer from allergies may experience runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes, but these reactions are very mild compared to anaphylactic reactions. There are important facts you should know about anaphylaxis and the common symptoms associated with it.

The symptoms are not always the same and the disease affects everyone differently. Some people may develop a skin rash, some may experience vomiting and nausea, while others have difficulty breathing or swallowing. There are common symptoms for anaphylaxis, but they can drastically change from person to person, same with reactions. When a person with anaphylaxis comes in contact with something they are allergic to the symptoms can quickly develop within seconds or minutes, or it may take hours. These symptoms may even go away, but will come back within 8 hours later. It is very important to avoid known allergens to keep yourself safe from life-threatening reactions.

Anaphylaxis is caused by a substance the body is allergic to. Things like shellfish, peanuts, eggs, latex or bee stings can cause an anaphylactic reaction to occur. Everyone’s body will have a different reaction and the best advice anyone can give to someone who suffers from anaphylaxis is to know what you’re eating and be extremely aware of your surroundings so you can avoid coming in contact with these allergens at all costs. Ignoring allergies can be very dangerous, so it is crucial to talk to you healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms so they can help identify what you are allergic to.

There is treatment available for anaphylaxis. If you are living with this disease or are at risk for developing it, it typically means carrying an epinephrine auto-injector with you at all times. These pens are prescribed by your doctor and usually come as a pair because often times you will need more than one dose to treat a severe allergic reaction.
