Your Thyroid Could Be the Culprit

Your Thyroid Could Be the Culprit

January is Thyroid Awareness Month and according to  Thyroid.org, an estimated 20 million Americans have a form  of thyroid disease. Becoming educated and understanding  what role your thyroid has in your body is vital to everyday  life. The thyroid produces hormones that help your body regulate your metabolism. When it is not functioning properly, you could experience Hyperthyroidism (it speeds up) or Hypothyroidism (it slows down).

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism are:

  • Rapid weight loss
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism are:

  • Weak or slow heartbeat
  • Muscular weakness
  • Constant fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Slow reflexes
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Thick, puffy, or dry skin
  • Slowed mental processes
  • Poor memory
  • Constipation

Even though the cause of thyroid problems is unknown, there are some daily habits you can implement into your life. By eating foods that are rich in iodine, which iodine is the fuel that produces the thyroid hormone, you are less likely to develop thyroid problems in life.

10 Food Rich in Iodine:

  • Fish
  • Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • White bread
  • Green beans
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Potatoes
  • Cranberries
  • Boiled eggs
