Acyclovir topical ointment 5% is a medication used to treat viral skin infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, including cold sores and genital herpes. It works by preventing the virus from replicating and spreading to healthy cells. Acyclovir comes in an ointment form, typically in a 5% strength, which is applied directly to the affected area of skin. It can help reduce the duration and severity of outbreaks and relieve symptoms such as pain, itching, and burning. However, it is not a cure for herpes and will not prevent future outbreaks. Acyclovir topical ointment 5% is available by prescription and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
