Acyclovir (5%) topical ointment is also used to treat cold sores caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). ACICLOVIR (5%) topical ointment is a antiviral medicine. It stops the virus from growing. This medicine is available as a cream, ointment, and pledgets. Pledgets are little dry cotton balls.
Use Acyclovir (5%) topical ointment as soon as you have signs of a fever blister, such as tingling, itching, soreness, or reddening of the skin. Do not wait until the fever blister breaks open.
