What is a fever?

Nobody likes having a fever. You feel drained, achy and just crummy from head to toe. However, a fever is actually a good thing - itis the body’s natural response to infection or an illness. The fever itself is not a disease; it is a symptom of the body trying to fight off one and (in normally healthy adults) usually only lasts a few days. A few common causes of a fever include the flu, certain infections, and even vaccinations or some types of medications. Normal temperature is around 98.6°F (37° C) (±1°) and the temperature at which you have a fever is usually considered to be over 100° F (37.8°C).

A thermometer is used to determine how serious the fever is. A temperature reading is usually taken orally, rectally, or from the armpit. There are some thermometers that are specifically for taking the temperature in one specific area or more tailored to small children. For example: an ear thermometer is usually only designed to be taken in the ear, or there are pacifier thermometers to help take the temperature of infants easier. What makes this digital thermometer by Pro Advantage great is that it is user-friendly and versatile enough to take the temperature orally, rectally or within the armpit, can read the temperature in either Celcius or Fahrenheit, and it audibly lets you know when the reading is finished. Simple.
