Keys To Success with Exos - Caring for your skin and brace

1) Wear it right, not too tight

  • Exos braces are designed to be worn with light pressure, allowing for a little wiggle room to promote air circulation and keep the skin dry and healthy
  • Wearing the Exos too tight can cause friction and shear during motion leading to irritation, rash, odor, and skin issues

2) It's ok for the Exos to get wet, but don't let it stay that way

  • If your physician allows for temporary removal of the brace, it is ok to get wet, wear in the shower, or swimming
  • When the brace gets wet, it should be removed and dried so that the brace and skin remain dry

3) Drying the Exos and underlying skin

  • Remove the Exos brace and wash both the brace and the underlying skin with an antimicrobial soap
  • Rinse off any excess soap
  • Use a hairdryer on high to thoroughly dry the brace and the skin
  • Reapply the brace as instructed by your physician

Indications:

The Exos Long Thumb Spica (LTS) provides stabilization to the first metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, carpometacarpal (CMC) joints, and the wrist joint.

Contraindications:

Patients with known allergies to foams, adhesives, and plastic products

Precautions:

  • Braces should be fitted by a qualified healthcare professional
  • Do not heat the brace on the body
  • Ensure the brace is not too hot prior to application
  • Ensure the appropriate size is used for proper support and function
  • Tighten with care over compromised skin, use a sleeve or stockinette for added protection
  • Do not heat over 100 degrees Celsius

Loosening the Exos

  • Lift the hook and loop fastener tab
  • Pull open the brace

To Close and Tighten

  • Pull the hook and loop fastener to cinch lace
  • Wrap excess lace around the brace
  • Secure the hook and loop fastener tab to the brace

Heating and Application

  • Open and unfold the brace
  • Heat the brace approximately 3-4 minutes or until the brace is pliable
  • Ensure the skin is completely dry before application
  • Fit the brace onto the patient
  • Remove any slack in the lace and attach the fastener tab to the brace
  • Do not tighten the brace fully until it has reached room temperature
  • Mold the brace into the desired position
  • Once hardened, tighten the lace to the desired tension
