Dimethicone Lotion

Dimethicone, or polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is a silicone oil with unique properties that make it a useful ingredient in many skin and hair care products. The ingredient adds a smoothness to the cream, while providing a protective barrier to the surface it’s applied to.  Dimethicone is widely used and has generally yielded very few adverse effects.

Dimethicone lotion is used as a moisturizer to treat or protect dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations like diaper rash. Because of it’s skin barrier properties, this ingredient is often found in diaper rash creams, like Desitin, and many incontinence care products including Baza skin protectant products. In barrier cream products, dimethicone is ideal because it stays on the surface of the skin making it difficult for unwanted wetness to come in contact with skin. This protects the skin from breakdown and helps reduce the likelihood of rash or irritation.

Dimethicone ointments can also help those who suffer from eczema. Eczema is an eruption of troubled skin and can burn and itch like a cluster of fresh mosquito bites that will not go away. The patches can show up all over the body. Unfortunately, there is no cure for eczema and there is no known cause. Victims of eczema need a good moisturizer that replenishes the loss of natural oils from the skin without irritating it. Dimethione lotions like Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream can protect the area from unwanted wetness and irritations while sealing in moisture keeping the area healthy. There are many different types of dimethicone creams available for eczema and other dry skin issues, inexpensively.
