Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is used to treat injuries and muscle trauma, and is also effective in toning muscle. Depending on the need for muscle stimulation, the techniques will vary by using different wavelengths, frequencies and duration in order to provide different results. EMS used alongside other treatment modalities is effective in improving overall results when applying muscle stimulation for the
rehabilitation of injuries.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a form of electrical muscle stimulation designed for pain relief. A TENS machine sends electrical impulses that are applied across the skin, over an injured or painful area, to draw out a pain-relieving response. Electronic Muscle Stimulation causes the muscles to contract, allowing blood and nutrients to reach the injured area. The patient will experience very little, if any, pain because of the lack of joint movement during this process. By keeping the area mobilized, this treatment heals the muscles and prevents muscle atrophy caused by lack of use.

In most cases, a physical therapist is required when using electrical muscle stimulation and s/he may utilize many other treatments along with it, including ultrasounds, cold and heat therapy, or muscle massage techniques on the soft tissue to reduce pain and speed up the healing process. However, there are TENS units that can be purchased for personal use. TENS units are even available in portable, discreet units that can be worn and used in normal, daily activity. This allows for treatment of chronic pain that would otherwise interfere with every day activities.
