Selecting A Power Wheelchair

Power wheelchairs have become very popular over the past decade and there are many brands and models available today. With all of the variety and endless choices, sometimes it can be hard to narrow it down and make a purchase. In addition, if you are looking to switch from a manual wheelchair to a powered chair, there are many features and options, making the choice process that much more difficult.

Let's explore some types of wheelchairs and how they differ from each other.

Lightweight Power Wheelchairs: As their name describes, these models are lightweight and easily portable. Most models will either detach in parts or fold as a unit to make them transportable. These models come with standard seat sizing and general options. Lightweight wheelchairs are great options for those who are on the go and are perfect for travel and vacations.

Standard Power Wheelchairs: Standard models are designed with more power for better speed and distance. They are also designed and built for daily use. However, because they are bigger and heavier than the lightweight models, transporting them in vehicles can be a challenge. Most standard models are designed with excellent drive features, large solid seats, and are available in many sizes. Often times, they handle better in outdoor situations than the lightweight models.

Active Power Wheelchairs: Designed for users who are busy and active in their everyday life, this chair is optimal for daily use. Active power chairs come with a variety of drive-train options, bigger motors and batteries with lots of juice, allowing active and outdoorsy people complete freedom with little worry of power failure or ground terrain. In addition to mechanical features, active model chairs generally also come with many seating size options, and may even have electric seat positioning options. While active chair features and design may vary from brand to brand, these chairs are wonderful for people on the go!

High Activity Power Wheelchairs: With the highest level of power and that ability to travel just about anywhere, super activity chairs are designed for users who rely on their mobility to get them everywhere. Boasting the largest batteries and motors in comparison to other power chair models, this model will get you wherever you need to go.

Bariatic Power Wheelchairs: Designed to accommodate persons of larger size, bariatric power chairs boast excellent construction with reinforced framing that will hold a weight capacity anywhere from 300 to 700 pounds. Plus, there are bariatric chairs on the market that do accommodate those whose weight is higher than the general range. Bariatric models come fitted with larger seats that are reinforced for comfort and peace of mind.
