Lidocaine Hydrochloride Topical Solution 4% is a liquid formulation containing 4% lidocaine hydrochloride (40 mg of lidocaine per 1 mL of solution), intended for direct application to the skin or mucous membranes to provide local anesthesia (numbing). This product is not for injection or oral ingestion, but is designed for topical use only.
Uses
- Relief of pain and itching: Minor burns, insect bites, sunburn, abrasions, skin irritation, hemorrhoids, and minor cuts.
- Procedural anesthesia: Used before minor skin procedures, such as insertion of IVs, blood draws, dermatologic laser treatments, tattooing, or minor surgical procedures.
- Dental and oral mucosa anesthesia: Sometimes applied in the mouth for numbing before dental work (under supervision).
Lidocaine Solution is used to reduce pain and sensation during certain procedures and medical treatments. It is a local anesthetic which means it numbs the target area to reduce pain and is available in a solution for easy topical application. Not only is Lidocaine Topical Solution effective in reducing pain, but it is also safe and easy to use.
How to Use
- Apply a thin layer directly to the affected area as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Avoid contact with eyes, inside the nose, ears, or deep/internal body cavities.
- Do not apply to large areas of broken or irritated skin unless instructed by a healthcare professional.
- Wash hands after application (unless hands are the treated area).
Active Ingredient
- Lidocaine hydrochloride 4% (40 mg/mL)
- Local anesthetic of the amide type
Formulation
- Clear, colorless to slightly colored liquid solution
- Intended for topical use (applied externally)
Mechanism of Action
- Lidocaine works by blocking sodium channels in nerve endings, preventing the formation and transmission of pain signals.
- Produces reversible numbness in the area where it is applied.
Precautions
- For external use only (except when directed by a healthcare provider for mucous membranes).
- Overuse can be dangerous: Excess absorption, especially over large areas or broken skin, can lead to lidocaine toxicity (seizures, heart rhythm problems, even death in rare severe cases).
- Do not use if allergic to local anesthetics of the amide type (like lidocaine, prilocaine).
- Keep out of reach of children.
