Description

Prevent™ 25G Winged Infusion Set (3/4″, 12″ Tubing, No Port)

A “Prevent” infusion set is a winged (butterfly) IV infusion set made by McKesson (Prevent® is their safety brand). It’s designed for venipuncture (accessing superficial veins for IV therapy or blood draw). The set consists of a 25-gauge, 3/4-inch stainless needle bonded to soft, flexible “wings,” ~12 inches of fine PVC tubing, and a Luer-lock connector at the tubing end. The wings help stabilize the needle against the patient’s skin (they interlock and conform to body contours). Critically, this set has no injection port on the line (“without port”), meaning you cannot inject medication directly into the tubing – all IV pushes or piggybacks must be done at another access point (for example, at the catheter or via a Y-port upstream). The Prevent line incorporates a built-in sliding safety shield over the needle. After use, the clinician activates this shield with one hand, locking the used needle in place to reduce needlestick injuries.

  • Needle & Wings: 25G×3/4″ (≈19 mm) thin-wall needle, color-coded (25G often orange). Mounted in a fixed winged hub with flexible wings for easy handling. The needle is bonded to the wings at a slight downward angle to minimize trauma and lumen occlusion.
  • Tubing: ≈12″ (30 cm) of coiled, clear PVC tubing that resists kinking/recoil. Because the tubing and needle bore are small, the priming volume is very low (on the order of ~0.4 mL). This means only a few drops of fluid are needed to expel air from the line before use.
  • Connector: Standard female Luer-lock fitting at the tubing end (to connect to IV sets, infusion pumps, extension sets, or blood collection adapters). The Luer Lock provides a secure, leak-free connection to other IV equipment.
  • Port: None. (“Without port” means there’s no needleless injection site on this set.)
  • Safety Feature: Sliding, hinged needle shield (“Prevent” Safety Winged Set). After withdrawing the needle from the vein, the shield slides up and locks over the sharp tip, providing one-handed activation and visual confirmation that the needle is locked away.
  • Sterility & Materials: Sterile, single-use device. Components are medical-grade and latex-free, DEHP-free (phthalate-free) PVC, reducing risks of allergic reaction or plasticizer leaching. The needle is stainless steel, the wings and tubing are PVC/poly, and the set is non-pyrogenic.
  • Packaging: Typically supplied sterile, individually wrapped. Commonly 50 per box (as a convenience pack).

Usage and Safety

A 25G 3/4″ winged infusion set is used for short-term IV access. It can be used to infuse fluids/medications or to draw blood from a vein. Clinicians hold the wings between thumb and finger for precise placement and insert the needle at a shallow angle into a vein. Once blood flashes into the tubing, they connect the Luer end to an infusion line or a blood collection adapter. For infusion, the set is usually attached to an IV line or pump (no inline drip chamber is included, so flow is controlled by the attached IV tubing clamp or pump settings). For blood draws, the Luer end can attach to vacuum tubes or syringe.

Because there is no integral flow regulator or clamp on the winged set, flow control is by the external IV line clamp or pump. To start an infusion, the caregiver primes (flips) the set by flushing 1–2 mL of IV fluid through it (about 0.4 mL to fill the tubing with no air), then attaches it to the patient and opens the clamp. The small priming volume means minimal fluid waste. During use, the wings secure the needle placement even if the patient moves. After the infusion or when removing the needle, the sliding safety shield is locked over the needle tip to prevent accidental sticks.

Important: This set has no needle-free injection port. Any IV drug pushes must be administered via another port in the line (for example, a port on the IV catheter or a Y-site on an extension tubing). Also, as with all IV devices, ensure the set is sterile and intact before use. Confirm the correct Luer connections (fully twist-lock the Luer) and keep the needle covered until ready to insert. Dispose of the used entire set in a sharps container according to biohazard protocol.

Specifications

  • Gauge/Needle: 25G (≈0.5 mm OD) stainless steel, 3/4″ length.
  • Wings: Fixed-wing hub, flexible plastic, color-coded, ≈16–20 mm wing span.
  • Tubing Length: 12″ (30 cm) PVC, DEHP- and latex-free.
  • Connector: Female Luer-lock (standard 6% taper) at tubing end.
  • Safety: Sliding needle sheath/shield (one-hand activation).
  • Port: None (“without port”).
  • Priming Volume: ~0.4 mL (very low due to small bore).
  • Sterility: Sterile (EO-sterilized), non-pyrogenic, single-use.
  • Features: Flexible interlocking wings, coil-resistant tubing to prevent kinking.

Regulatory/Safety: This is an FDA Class II (US) or CE-marked medical device. Each set is disposable; do not reuse or resterilize. By design it is latex-free and DEHP-free. Handle all sharps with care; use the safety shield immediately after vein access is complete. In summary, the Prevent 25G 3/4″ × 12″ winged infusion set is a short peripheral IV access device (a “butterfly” needle set) with a sliding safety mechanism, used for safe venous access in IV therapy or phlebotomy.
