Description

SureComfort Insulin Syringes (29G × 1/2″ (12.7 mm), 0.3 mL, U-100)

Product Overview: These are sterile, single-use insulin syringes (SureComfort by Allison Medical) with a 29-gauge, 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) needle. The 0.3 mL (0.3 cc) barrel holds up to 30 units of U-100 insulin (100 units/mL). 29G is an ultrafine needle (≈0.33 mm outer diameter), chosen to minimize injection pain while maintaining adequate strength. The short barrel and fine needle make these syringes suitable for precise small-dose injections (often used in pediatrics or low-dose therapy).

  • Gauge & Diameter: 29G (≈0.33 mm diameter) – a very fine insulin needle. Thinner than older 25–26G needles, it helps reduce pain, though it is slightly thicker than 31G (≈0.26 mm) needles.
  • Needle Length: 12.7 mm (1/2″). This short length targets subcutaneous fat; however, it is long enough that proper technique is needed to avoid intramuscular injection (see below).
  • Volume & Calibration: 0.3 mL (0.3 cc) capacity, with clear graduations up to 30 units of insulin. (1 unit = 0.01 mL.) Bold, permanent markings on the barrel support accurate dosing.
  • Packaging: Sterile and individually wrapped. Supplied 100 syringes per box (no safety shield), 5 boxes per case (500 total). Each syringe has a large finger flange and two snap-on caps (a white barrel cap and an orange needle cap) for protection.
  • Quality/Design: Made by Allison Medical (SureComfort line) in ISO-certified facilities. The needles are siliconized/lubricated and inspected for imperfections to ensure a smooth, comfortable injection. Permanent, high-contrast dose markings and a large plunger flange aid precise, easy dosing.

Injection Technique

These syringes are intended for subcutaneous insulin injections (into fatty tissue). Common sites are the abdomen, thighs, buttocks or upper arms. Always rotate sites to prevent lipohypertrophy (lumps or scars). Because the needle is 12.7 mm long, best practice is to pinch up a skin fold and inject at a 90° angle, ensuring the needle goes fully into fat. Alternatively, one may inject at a 45° angle without a skin fold to similarly avoid hitting muscle. For example, guidelines note that 12 mm needles can be used either way (90° with a pinched fold or 45° without) to achieve subcutaneous delivery. After inserting the needle and depressing the plunger, hold the syringe in place for a few seconds so the full dose is absorbed. As always, clean the site beforehand with alcohol. If mixing two insulins in this syringe (as prescribed), do not change the order of mixing or swap to a different syringe brand without consulting the prescriber – such changes can cause dosing errors.

Comfort and Ease of Use

The ultra-fine 29G needle and smooth plunger give comfortable, reliable injections. SureComfort syringes are marketed for patient comfort – each needle is carefully lubricated and quality-checked to minimize pain. The small 0.3 mL size is easy to handle for precise dosing of small insulin amounts. Plunger markings are bold and permanent, making the small graduations easy to read. In practice, users find that the fine needle glides smoothly and that accurate dosing is straightforward. (Allison notes that bold dosing marks and an oversized finger flap improve injection control.) Many clinicians agree that thinner gauges and shorter needles reduce anxiety and enhance adherence to insulin therapy.

Safety, Storage, and Disposal

  • Single-Use Only: Each syringe is sterile and intended for one injection. Manufacturer instructions stress “use syringe ONCE only” and to “destroy and contain” the syringe and needle after use. Do not reuse or share syringes; reuse can blunt the needle, introduce infection, and lead to inaccurate dosing.
  • Needle Handling: Keep the needle capped until just before injection. After injection, if safer and feasible, recap the needle using a one-handed “scoop” technique to avoid sticks. Immediately place the used syringe (with the cap on) into a sharps container; do not recap by hand or leave the needle exposed unnecessarily.
  • Sharps Disposal: Dispose of all used needles/syringes in an FDA-approved sharps container. The U.S. FDA explicitly recommends placing used needles and syringes in rigid, puncture-resistant sharps containers (available at pharmacies or medical suppliers) to reduce risk of injury. Never throw loose needles into household trash or recycling. When the sharps container is about three-quarters full (marked on the container), follow local guidelines for disposal or drop-off.
  • Storage: Store unopened syringes at room temperature, away from extreme heat or cold. Use before the expiration date printed on the package. Keep the kit area clean and dry.
  • Precautions: Verify you are using the correct U-100 syringe for your insulin. The “U-100” label is stamped on the syringe. If insulin is inadvertently administered in the wrong way (e.g. into muscle) it may act too quickly or unpredictably. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on injection technique and insulin management.
