BD Nexiva™ Diffusics™ Closed IV Catheter (20G × 1″, BD #383592)
This is a sterile, single-use peripheral IV catheter (20 gauge, 1-inch length) from BD’s “Nexiva” closed IV catheter family. It has a closed-end design (no built‐in needle-free port) and comes with an attached extension tubing (a “closed system”).
Diffusics Tip for CT Injection:
It is the Diffusics version of Nexiva, meaning the catheter tip has three laser-cut teardrop holes to diffuse contrast dye. This special tip lets the 20G catheter safely handle high-pressure radiographic (e.g. CT) injections (up to ~325 psi) and meet high-flow injection protocols. In practice BD lists this 20G×1″ Diffusics catheter as suitable for power injections (e.g. up to ~68 mL/min flow in testing).
Materials & Stability:
The catheter itself is made of BD’s Vialon™ biomaterial – a flexible polymer that softens when inside the vein. This helps patient comfort and allows longer catheter dwell times (studies show Vialon can extend dwell and reduce phlebitis risk). The Nexiva system also includes a built-in stabilisation platform and BD’s InstaFlash™ needle, which improve insertion accuracy and reduce “hit-and-miss” attempts.
Closed System Design:
Nexiva is pre-assembled with its extension tubing, forming a truly closed IV system. This minimizes clinician blood exposure and disconnect risks during insertion. In fact, BD reports that the Nexiva closed system reduces blood exposure by ~98% compared to open catheter systems. (BD markets this as its “blood control” design.)
Usage:
This device requires use of a separate needleless connector or luer port to infuse fluids (since it has no built-in port – it is “closed end”). It is indicated for IV access in patients needing standard infusion or contrast injection (e.g. CT imaging). The catheter is packaged 20 per box (with 4 boxes per case).
