Ammonia inhalants, often known as smelling salts, are primarily used to revive individuals who have fainted or to prevent or alleviate dizziness. They work by releasing ammonia gas, which irritates the mucous membranes in the nose and lungs, consequently stimulating the respiratory system and increasing alertness. Traditionally used in medical settings, sports, and emergency situations, ammonia inhalants offer a quick, temporary boost in alertness and cognitive function. Users should exercise caution, as improper use or exposure can cause irritation.
