Description

Sutab Bowel Prep

Sutab is a prescription‐only bowel preparation used to clean out the colon before a colonoscopy. It is a brand name for a tablet combination of sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and potassium chloride. Official labeling describes Sutab as “an orally administered osmotic laxative” supplied in two 12-tablet bottles. Each 12-tablet bottle contains a dessicant packet (to be discarded before use). Both bottles (24 tablets total) are needed for a complete preparation. For example, the FDA package insert states that “two doses (24 tablets) are required for a complete preparation”. In plain language, Cleveland Clinic explains that Sutab “cleans out your colon” by pulling water into your intestines to produce bowel movements. By drawing in fluid, it causes a watery evacuation to empty the colon.

Sutab was FDA-approved in 2020 (U.S.) as the first tablet colonoscopy prep. It is made by Braintree Laboratories (a part of Sebela Pharmaceuticals). No generic version is currently available. It is indicated only for adults and only for colonoscopy preparation. Patients must obtain a doctor’s prescription and follow the doctor’s timing and dietary instructions.

How to Take Sutab (Dosing)

The usual regimen is a split‐dose (two back-to-back doses) timed around the procedure. Each dose consists of 12 tablets, taken with water, followed by extra fluids. For example, the official dosing guide says:

  • Dose 1: Take 12 tablets with about 16 ounces (0.5 liter) of water. Then drink two more 16-oz glasses of water (total ~48 oz after the tablets). This is usually done the evening before the colonoscopy (e.g. around 6–9 p.m.).
  • Dose 2: Take the second 12 tablets with 16 oz of water at least several hours before the procedure (often early morning of exam day). Again, follow with two additional 16-oz glasses of water.

For clarity, an official “split-dose regimen” chart shows “Dose 1 consists of 12 tablets and 16 oz of water” and “Dose 2 consists of 12 tablets and 16 oz of water,” with each dose followed by 32 oz more water. (Individual schedules may vary; always follow your physician’s instructions on exact timing.)

  • After taking the pills as above, continue to drink clear liquids (water, broth, clear juice, etc.) until a few hours before the procedure, as directed by your doctor.

Packaging and Kit Contents

A commercial Sutab kit contains two plastic bottles of tablets plus mixing tools:

  • 2 bottles of 12 tablets each. (Each bottle holds 12 coated laxative pills.)
  • 1 measuring cup (16-oz size). Used to measure water for mixing and drinking.
  • 1 patient instruction booklet. Includes detailed directions in multiple languages.

Both 12-tablet bottles are required to perform a full prep. (Twelve tablets equal one dose.) Importantly, remove and discard the moisture‐absorbing packet (“desiccant”) found in each bottle before use. The label warns: “Each SUTAB bottle contains a desiccant. Remove and discard the desiccant from each bottle of SUTAB prior to use”.

Side Effects and Precautions

As with all colonoscopy preps, Sutab causes intense diarrhea and can affect electrolyte balance. The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal in nature: nausea, abdominal bloating/distension, vomiting, and stomach pain. Expect frequent loose, watery stools as the colon flushes out. (These effects are typical and indicate the medicine is working.)

Because Sutab draws water into the bowels, dehydration and electrolyte changes are risks if you don’t drink enough fluid. The official label strongly advises patients to “hydrate adequately before, during, and after the use of SUTAB”. Severe vomiting or dehydration should be reported to a doctor; blood tests (electrolytes, kidney function) may be recommended if problems arise. In other words, drink copious clear liquids (water, broths, electrolyte drinks) per the instructions to stay safely hydrated.

Do not take Sutab if you have certain conditions: for example, bowel obstruction, perforation, or toxic colitis/megacolon. The package insert and medical guides warn against use if you have a known allergy to any ingredients or severe kidney or heart problems that could worsen with sudden fluid shifts. Because of the salt content, Sutab is generally contraindicated in patients with impaired kidney function or congestive heart failure. Always inform your doctor of medications (especially diuretics or heart drugs) or health issues that could alter blood chemistry.

Some patients report infrequent but serious side effects: allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions, electrolyte disturbances leading to arrhythmia or seizures, or intestinal injury. These are rare but noted in warnings. For example, the SUTAB instructions say to use caution (or avoid use) in anyone at risk for fluid/electrolyte problems, since imbalances “can lead to serious adverse events, including cardiac arrhythmias, seizures and renal impairment”.

In summary: Expect complete bowel emptying (diarrhea) after taking Sutab. Common side effects are mild GI upset. Always follow the prep instructions exactly, stay hydrated, and only take the tablets with plenty of water (discard the desiccant packet first). Do not self-dose or prolong the procedure beyond what your doctor has ordered.

Availability and Cost

Sutab is available by prescription only at retail pharmacies. It is a branded product (no generic alternative). When not covered by insurance, it can be expensive: one drug discount site lists the average cash price around $240–$345 for a 24-tablet kit. (For example, WebMDRx cites about $345 average, though coupons can cut it to ~$196.) Some prescription savings programs or coupons (e.g. SingleCare, manufacturer coupons) may reduce your out-of-pocket cost down to roughly $170–$200, but prices can vary widely between pharmacies.

Because Sutab requires a doctor’s order, the usual process is to get it written in advance, then have it filled at a pharmacy (often when you pick up other colonoscopy instructions). Many endoscopy centers or doctors’ offices can also send the prescription to your pharmacy as part of your prep order. If you are uninsured or concerned about cost, ask your doctor or pharmacist about assistance programs — both the manufacturer and third-party card services sometimes offer savings for eligible patients.

Key point: Sutab comes as two bottles of 12 tablets (prepare to take all 24) with strict instructions. Always follow your healthcare provider’s plan for use. Carefully read all materials in the kit and consult your doctor or pharmacist if anything is unclear. Don’t hesitate to ask about side effects or costs; they can help ensure you have what you need for a safe, clean colonoscopy prep.
