Description

Fluocinolone Acetonide Ointment 0.025% is a medium-potency topical corticosteroid. It is primarily prescribed for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. These include a variety of skin conditions such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis. It may also be used for other corticosteroid-responsive conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.

Mechanism of Action: Fluocinolone acetonide works by suppressing the local inflammatory response, decreasing edema, erythema, pruritus, and discomfort through its vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications:

  • Relief of symptoms (inflammation and itching) in corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses
  • Commonly used for:
    • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
    • Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
    • Lichen planus
    • Seborrheic dermatitis
    • Allergic and irritant contact dermatitis
    • Other localized skin inflammatory conditions

Dosage and Administration:

  • Applied topically: A thin film is gently massaged into the affected area 2–4 times daily, as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • Duration: Use is typically limited to short courses (<2 weeks for most) or as directed, especially in children, to minimize risk of adverse effects.

Cautions and Contraindications:

  • Not for use on the face, groin, axillae, or under occlusion unless specifically directed due to risk of increased absorption and side effects.
  • Not recommended for bacterial, viral, fungal, or tubercular skin infections unless being used as an adjunct to appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
  • Long-term or inappropriate use can lead to skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, and systemic corticosteroid side effects.

Fluocinolone Acetonide Ointment 0.025% is an anti-inflammatory topical agent for the management of inflammatory skin disorders responsive to corticosteroids. Its use should always be under the guidance of a healthcare provider to minimize risk and optimize therapeutic benefit.
