Professional-Grade Chemical Cautery Sticks for Minor Bleeding, Granulation Tissue, and Wart Removal
Fast, Reliable Chemical Cautery for Minor Bleeding and Skin Procedures
Silver Nitrate Sticks are the #1 choice for chemical cauterization in medical and clinical settings, trusted by physicians, dermatologists, nurses, and wound care specialists. Each stick delivers precise topical application of silver nitrate with guaranteed potency for the effective treatment of minor bleeding (epistaxis/nosebleeds), hypergranulation tissue, warts, and minor skin lesions. For fast, controlled results—choose the industry’s most reliable chemical cautery solution!
Silver Nitrate Sticks for Cauterization work by burning and sealing the tissue. It is a quick, effective way to stop bleeding and is often used in first aid. Silver nitrate sticks are also used in the medical field to cauterize wounds. The sticks are heated until they are red hot and then applied to the wound. The heat from the stick seals the blood vessels and stops the bleeding. Silver Nitrate Sticks for Cauterization used to remove unwanted skin tags, warts, aphthous ulcers, or over-production of granulation tissue by chemically cauterize the skin by providing hemostasis or permanently destroying unwanted tissue. Silver nitrate sticks contain 75% silver nitrate and 25% potassium nitrate that allows the chemically cauterization process to occur. 100 disposable sticks per vial tube.
Silver Nitrate Sticks for Cauterization
The silver and potassium nitrates in caustic pencils is in a dried, solid form at the tip of a wooden or plastic stick. When the material is applied to a wound or lesion, the tissue moisture or blood dissolves the dried nitrate salts, which then chemically burn the tissue. It requires moisture for activation.
Silver nitrate sticks are often used for minor hemostasis where patients are not under general anesthesia, and where electrocautery would be painful and inconvenient. One common use of silver nitrate sticks is in Emergency Medicine, to control epistaxis (nosebleed). The stick is rolled on the affected mucous membrane or visible blood vessel in the nares (nostril) where the chemical cauterization stops the minor bleeding.
If the bleeding is too copious, the chemical cautery may not be effective, as the flowing blood can wash away the chemical before it can react with the tissue. It can also be accidentally spread to undesirable locations where it can cause skin staining and tissue burns. This is especially important, as it is often used in the nose where accidental aerosolization can occur, splattering the clinician or other parts of the patient and causing unintentional burns. Accidental application to unintended tissue is treated with copious water irrigation.

Uses and Applications
Silver Nitrate Sticks are commonly used for:
- Chemical cauterization of minor bleeding: Epistaxis (nosebleed control), small wounds, and lacerations
- Destruction of hypergranulation tissue: “Proud flesh” in wounds, ulcers, post-surgical sites
- Removal of simple warts and skin tags: Chemical ablation of superficial lesions
- Umbilical granulomas in newborns
- Management of aphthous ulcers (by healthcare professional)
- Superficial skin lesion treatment: Minor recurring canker sores, mucous membrane lesions (oral, genital, as medically indicated)
- Adjunct in wound care and dermatology procedures
For professional use in clinics, hospitals, urgent care, and physician offices
How to Use
- Don gloves and prepare area. Clean and dry intended site of cauterization.
- Remove ONE stick from packaging. Use immediately.
- Moisten tip with sterile water or saline (if not treating an actively moist lesion)—do NOT use alcohol.
- Apply tip gently and precisely to area to be cauterized. A gray/white eschar forms where silver nitrate contacts tissue.
- Contact time: 10-30 seconds or as directed by established clinical protocols.
- Discard single-use stick after one use.
- Wash hands and avoid accidental contact with healthy tissue, skin, or eyes.
Note: ONLY trained healthcare professionals should apply to mucous membranes or delicate areas.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults & Children: Apply to affected tissue for up to 30 seconds, repeat as necessary
- Frequency: Use as a single application or repeat per protocol, typically once daily until desired effect (hemostasis, ablation, etc.) is achieved
- Do NOT reuse or cross-contaminate with multiple sticks
- If treating larger areas, apply serially with new sticks each time
Always follow your facility’s guidelines and the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
- Mild burning or stinging at application site
- Temporary black or gray discoloration of skin or tissue
- Localized tissue necrosis/eschar formation
Rare/Serious Side Effects
- Accidental chemical burns to healthy skin or eyes
- Prolonged tissue damage with over-application or repeated use
- Allergic skin reactions (rare)
- Excessive granulation tissue formation (if used improperly)
If accidental exposure to eyes or mucosa occurs, rinse immediately with copious water and seek medical attention.
