Why is sterile, latex-free gauze used?
When someone is injured, has just undergone surgery or undergone an invasive procedure, gauze is often used to cover or pack the wound. This is done to stop bleeding and protect it from infection. One good way to prevent cross-contamination and reduce your patient’s risk of infection is to use sterile gauze dressings. Another way to better serve your patient is to use latex-free products. Many people have developed an allergy to latex that can range in severity, from hives and minor skin irritations to an all-out anaphylactic shock allergic reaction. Using latex-fee gauze dressings reduces your patient’s chance of an allergic reaction to the very thing that is helping their skin to mend, so you and your patient can move on to the healing process.
