Why is Stool Collected for Testing?
Stool is collected to determine if blood, leukocytes, ova and parasites (protozoa or worms), bile, fat, pathogens, toxins, or substances such as ingested drugs are present. Visual examination of the stool characteristics---such as color, consistency, and odor---can reveal such conditions as gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and steatorrhea.
