Wound Stapler (Squeeze Handle, Stainless Steel Staples)

A wound stapler with a squeeze-handle is a single-use, sterile surgical device used to close skin incisions or lacerations quickly and securely. It works much like a staple gun for skin: the surgeon or provider positions the stapler over the wound edges, then squeezes the handles to deploy one stainless-steel skin staple at a time. The staples bring the skin edges together to promote healing. This particular model comes pre-loaded with 35 surgical-grade 316L stainless steel staples (the “wide” type staples, ~6.5 mm wide when formed). Each squeeze of the ergonomic two-handle trigger ejects one staple. The stapler has a fixed head with a clear window to see remaining staples and an audible “click” when a staple is fully forme.

Uses

Skin staplers are used in hospitals and clinics to close external skin wounds – for example surgical incisions, traumatic cuts, or lacerations. They are commonly used in emergency and operating rooms for patients of all ages (except very small children where special pediatric staplers or sutures may be preferred). According to product descriptions, these staplers are “designed for closing skin wounds in surgical or traumatic settings” and may be used on medium to thick skin or longer incisions (the “wide” staple size is often chosen for tougher tissues). Stapling is much faster than sewing sutures, so it is especially useful when time is critical (such as trauma cases) or for long straight incisions (e.g. after abdominal surgery, hip replacement, etc.).

Operation

To use the stapler, the skin edges should first be cleaned and properly aligned. The provider opens the stapler, places the jaws over the approximated skin edges at the wound, and then squeezes the handles together. This action pushes a stainless steel staple out of the cartridge through both sides of the skin and bends its ends to secure the tissue (much like basting stitches). One staple is driven each time the handle is squeezed. The fixed head and “pre-cocking” feature allow precise placement – the instrument is often “cocked” (opened) before positioning on the skin. An audible click signals each staple release. The transparent viewing window lets the user see how many staples remain and helps ensure proper orientation. The stapler can be fired at multiple angles if needed, and after each firing it automatically releases so the stapler can be lifted off the wound.

After the wound is fully closed, the staples hold it together until healing. A special staple removal tool (not included) is required to remove the staples later once the skin has healed (usually about 7–14 days for most surgical wounds). The stapler device itself is then discarded – staples stay in the skin until removed.

Specifications and Packaging

  • Staple count: 35 staples per stapler.
  • Staple material: 316L stainless steel (contains nickel).
  • Staple size (wide type): roughly 6.5 mm wide by about 4–4.7 mm high when closed. (There is also a narrower 5.7 mm-wide “regular” staple version for thin skin.)
  • Handle type: Squeeze (two-handle) design for one-handed operation. The handle and trigger pull are ergonomic, allowing precise control.
  • Visibility: Clear plastic cartridge shows staple count.
  • Firing: One staple per squeeze, with an audible click when fully formed.
  • Sterility: Each stapler is sterilized and individually packaged. Store at room temperature. Single-use only; do not reuse or re-sterilize.
  • Latex: Not made with natural rubber latex.

The product comes in boxes (often 12 per box). Some versions mention a “wide staple” for general use on normal or thick skin, versus a narrower staple for delicate areas.

Precautions

  • Clinical use only: Staplers should be used by qualified healthcare providers trained in skin closure techniques.
  • Not for mucous membranes: These are for external skin only (not for inside the body or on the scalp).
  • Allergies: Contains nickel (in the stainless steel); avoid in patients with known nickel allergy.
  • Infection control: Use standard sterile technique when stapling.
  • Removal: Plan for staple removal at an appropriate time (typically 1–2 weeks after placement); leaving staples too long can cause scarring.
  • Damage risk: Do not squeeze or fire staples unless the device is correctly positioned, to avoid injury to underlying tissues.
