ICU Medical

ICU Medical, Inc. is an American medical technology company based in San Clemente, California. It develops and manufactures devices for intravenous (IV) therapy, critical care, and oncology applications. In simpler terms, ICU Medical makes many of the IV-related equipment used in hospitals to safely deliver fluids and medications to patients.

Products and Services: ICU Medical’s portfolio includes IV infusion pumps, IV solutions and administration sets (tubing and drip sets), needle-free connectors for IV lines, and critical care monitoring devices. They also provide specialized systems for oncology drug delivery (e.g. closed-system transfer devices that help administer chemotherapy safely). These products are used worldwide in hospitals, clinics, and even home-care settings to improve patient safety and make infusion therapy more efficient.

Growth and Leadership: Over the years, ICU Medical expanded both through innovation and strategic acquisitions. In 2017, it acquired Hospira’s infusion systems business from Pfizer, gaining well-known IV pump lines (like the Plum infusion pumps) and other IV therapy products. In 2022, ICU Medical also acquired Smiths Medical, another major infusion and critical care device manufacturer. These acquisitions greatly broadened ICU Medical’s product portfolio and global reach, making it one of the world’s leading suppliers of IV therapy and critical care equipment. Today, the company continues to provide hospitals and healthcare providers with a comprehensive range of IV therapy solutions, focusing on safety, quality, and innovation in patient care.

ICU Medical History

The company was founded in 1984 by Dr. George “Doc” Lopez, an emergency room physician. Dr. Lopez invented a safer IV connection device called the “ClickLock” after one of his patients died from an accidental IV line disconnect. This innovation – which prevented IV lines from separating and protected healthcare workers from needle sticks – launched ICU Medical’s focus on improving IV safety and set the foundation for its future product line.

ICU Medical designs and manufactures a range of IV therapy and critical care products. Here’s a list of some key products/categories and what they do:

  • Infusion Pumps (Large-Volume & PCA): Examples: Plum 360, LifeCare PCA. These are electronic pumps that deliver fluids and medications intravenously at precise rates. The Plum 360 is a large-volume infusion pump commonly used in hospitals for general IV infusions, while the LifeCare PCA pump allows patient-controlled analgesia – letting patients self-administer pain medication within safe limits.

  • Ambulatory and Syringe Pumps: Examples: CADD-Solis, Medfusion 4000. These are smaller, portable pumps. The CADD-Solis is an ambulatory pump often used for pain management or home infusions (patients can carry it with them for continuous therapy). The Medfusion 4000 is a syringe pump designed for very precise, small-volume infusions (commonly used in pediatrics or critical care for medications like neonatal drips or anesthesia drugs).

  • IV Administration Sets & Accessories: ICU Medical produces the tubing and drip sets that connect IV fluid bags to patients. This includes primary IV sets (tubing with drip chambers to deliver fluids from the IV bag) and secondary sets (shorter tubing for IV piggyback medications). They also make components like drip chambers, clamps, filters, and extension sets to ensure IV fluids are delivered safely and accurately. These sets come in various “drip factors” (e.g., macrodrip sets for standard infusions and microdrip sets for very slow, precise infusions).

  • Needle-Free IV Connectors: Examples: Clave®, MicroClave®. These are specialized ports that attach to IV lines and allow syringes or IV tubing to connect without using needles. For instance, the MicroClave connector lets a nurse inject medication or draw blood by simply pushing a syringe into the port. This reduces the risk of needle-stick injuries and helps prevent infection by keeping the IV system closed.

  • Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTDs) for Hazardous Drugs: Examples: ChemoClave®, ChemoLock®. These systems allow pharmacists and nurses to safely mix and administer chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs. They prevent harmful drug vapors or liquids from escaping during preparation and injection. ChemoClave is a needle-free system with special adapters and connectors that keep chemo drugs contained, protecting healthcare workers from exposure. ChemoLock is a similar closed system that “locks” together, ensuring a leak-proof seal when transferring hazardous medications.

  • Dialysis and Specialty Connectors: Example: Tego® Hemodialysis Connector. ICU Medical makes connectors for dialysis catheters that maintain a closed system. The Tego connector attaches to a patient’s dialysis catheter and allows blood lines to connect for dialysis without opening the line to air, which helps prevent infection and air bubbles. It stays in place between dialysis sessions, keeping the catheter sealed and reducing infection risk.

  • IV Solutions and Fluid Delivery Products: Through acquisitions, ICU Medical also supplies some IV fluids and solution bags and related products. (After acquiring Hospira’s infusion business, they provide solutions like saline or electrolyte IV bags used with their tubing and pumps.) These fluids are the actual sterile solutions delivered to patients for hydration, nutrition (like TPN), or as carriers for IV medications.

  • Critical Care Monitoring Devices: (Gained via the Smiths Medical acquisition.) ICU Medical now offers products like disposable pressure transducers, tubing, and connectors for hemodynamic monitoring. These are used in ICUs and operating rooms to connect patients to bedside monitors – for example, measuring a patient’s blood pressure directly from an artery (art-line kits) or other critical pressure monitoring. They ensure accurate readings while maintaining sterility in critical care settings.

  • Peripheral IV Catheters and Vascular Access: Another addition from Smiths Medical’s portfolio, ICU Medical provides IV catheters (like the Jelco® brand) which are the small plastic catheters inserted into a patient’s vein to start an IV line. They also offer various central venous catheters and accessories for ICU use, and administration aids (like securement devices and dressing kits) to help start and maintain IV access safely.

  • Infection Prevention Accessories: Example: SwabCap®. These are small add-on products to improve IV line hygiene. SwabCap is a tiny cap imbued with disinfectant that screws onto the end of an IV connector when it’s not in use. It keeps the IV port continuously bathed in antiseptic, reducing the chance of bacteria entering the IV line when it’s accessed the next time.

Each of these products plays a role in safe and effective IV therapy or critical care. From the pumps that accurately deliver medications, to the tubing and catheters that carry fluids, and the connectors that maintain a closed, sterile system – ICU Medical’s products are all about connecting patients to the vital infusions and monitoring they need, as safely and conveniently as possible.
