What is a Carson catheter?

A catheter is a tubular device used to prevent urine leakage when a patient cannot hold his/her own bladder. There are a few different styles that serve doctors and patients in different ways. For example, the foley catheter has a balloon on one end designed to comfortably hold it in the bladder after insertion. Conversely, the Robinson catheter doesn’t have a balloon and is more designed for quick, intermittent bladder drainage.

The name “Carson” in the Carson catheter refers to the tip of the device. This tip is tapered and softly angled upward and would prove especially useful when inserted into the male urethra when there is a blockage present that is preventing natural urination. To avoid bladder damage and considerable pain caused by the blockage, the carson foley catheter would be inserted through the urethra into the bladder and allow the urine to drain out into a colleciton bag until the blockage was removed.
